Be Creative

 A Result Of The Drawing Challenge.

Several, out of the ordinary, things happened during and after the month of daily drawings.  New friends, insightful comments, artist's discussing new topics, and a book to read.  After following all the posts about the challenge a friend gifted a book to me, one with which I was not familiar. It's all about how to develop drawing skills, overcome creative blocks, acknowledging while you draw you enter a meditative state in order to find creative connections and confidence.  

It's The Confident Creative written by Cat Bennett. Already my copy has high-lighted passages and turned down corners... look:

Drawing Challenge 1.

Day One

Pencil sketch.  

This is it.  The first drawing of the challenge to create a drawing every day in October.  Inspired by the cooler temperatures, the beginning of Fall Colors. The fact that the local aspen trees have grabbed my attention has transferred into my sketch book.  But it didn't stop there.  

This must become a painting, so I appropriated a 48" x 30" blank canvas from my inventory and started with the under painting. I just knew this challenge would be interesting and move in other directions.

What is Drawing?

The other day an artist friend of mine challenged me to create a drawing every day in October.  Challenge accepted.  And based on the definition above, the paints and brushes should be put away, however rules are made so they can be broken.  Just guessing, but most likely my drawings will consist of a variety of materials.  I will post them on my blog as well as my Artist's Facebook page so you can follow along.  So here we go....let's explore drawing, and see if we can make up our own definition as we go along.

New Things Going On.

In The Studio, That Is.

It must be the time for new beginnings.  Not sure why, but I do know that for about a year I have been fascinated with the idea of painting images of the Indian women who lived in the area where I live.  Oh my, that means portraits. And that means something new. Portraits.  A bit frightening. But I love a challenge and if you read this blog you know I believe you are just producing if you are not pushing yourself as an artist, discovering new, making new......creating.  But the thought of portraits......

And then I remembered my first drawing class and the subject placed in front of us.  My instructor gave us a photograph of a man's face, drawing paper and a selection of pencils.  And great instructor he was, taking the fear away, teaching how to see the negative spaces, draw the negative spaces and in the process taking away the thought that it was a face, taking away preconceived notions of how this drawing should look.

Ok, so I am ready for this challenge.  I think I know what I want to accomplish and I will share it here as I make progress, so stay tuned, come on back, be a part of new things going on in my studio.
