Painting A New Canvas

Continuing the Project

Canvas on the easel, and the under painting begins.  Not sure why, but my fingers always seem to end up in the paint.

If you follow my blog you know I am beginning a larger version of the small painting shown here, below.  I was challenged by another painter to create a Tahoe Rock composition including red in the palette.  RED.  RED????

An interesting challenge, though not necessarily an easy challenge, and the little painting here is what I came up with as a start.  Now to address the 18x24" canvas which is the size included in the challenge.

Under painting completed.

Sketched in the composition.

My favorite part...when the rocks start to take form on the canvas.

This is looking at the canvas after more studio time this morning. So much more painting to accomplish before the painting will be done.  I am not sure I enjoy the use of red with these rocks.

First Painting of 2018

Using Red in the Palette.

The quick 'sketch' type of painting for a larger work, the first painting of 2018 is done.  This is a great way to work out composition and palette, figure out high lights and low lights, shadows....and things I want to change.

Now it's time to move on to the larger canvas, not too large as my work goes, only 18" x 24".

Check back to see what stays the same and what changes as the larger work comes together.  More studio time for me and beginning the second painting of 2018.

Progress on Painting.

It's Just The Beginning

Palette Selection

It is just the beginning of 2018 and of a new painting, with a new palette.  Requested by another painter, this Tahoe Rock work will feature red tones.  It all begins with selecting the pigments as shown above.

Next step, sketching out a composition.

Then working out the palette and composition on a small canvas board.

These photos show the progress made as of today. The little painting needs to be completed and then the project will move to a larger, stretched canvas. This is just the beginning.
