Bear Paintings

How It Happened

A week ago I was unpacking, unpacking, unpacking which leads to putting away, putting away, putting away, and organizing, organizing, organizing as well as cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.  And you know what happens when you do that?  You find things you have forgotten about, you find things that spark new ideas, you just find things.  What starts as a bit of an ordeal and chore turns into creative inspiration.

So when I laid out tube after tube of pigments, and realized some needed to be used soon, something happened.

When I opened drawers to put away beads and found stacks of textured origami papers, something happened.

When I opened a sketch book from a couple years ago and saw a sketch of a bear, something happened.

Oh, sketches of bears you say.....  I have wanted to paint these visitors for many years but just could not figure out how I wanted to present them.  I sat down and did another sketch because my brain was firing on all cylinders, filled with ideas of COLOR, TEXTURE, COLOR, TEXTURE....and bears.

The studio has been a beehive of furious activity with cutting and gluing papers, brushes dipping into a riot of color, fingers smearing the pigments.  And something happened! A new group of paintings has begun, and here they are.....

Sleepy Bear

Standing Baby Bear

Sly Bear

Hug Me Bear

Something happened all right.  I found a new group of paintings, a new direction, but one that is based on all my previous work with small differences.  More to come...

Fence Post Cactus II.

The Beginning of the Second Canvas

You recall I am painting a triptych (three canvases that will hang together) of Fence Post Cactus, or plants that look or fit that general description, and that I completed the first canvas.  So now, here is the beginning of the second canvas.

It's a Browningia hertlingiana....quite a mouth full.  These magnificent plants which live in the dry valleys of Peru grow to 33 feet tall.  Substantial.  I particularly like the faceted look of the plant parts;  like little jewels.

This Browningia hertlingiana has wickedly spiky, sharply pointed, long thorns to protect those little jewels.

It is a slow process to brush on each thorn, but it is rewarding to see the plant come to life on the canvas.  First the thorns go on and secondly the shadows they cast. After the addition of a few minor high lights,  it will be time to begin the third canvas.

An Evening With Fine Art

What a Great Opportunity...

To purchase a work of art at an incredible price, spend the evening at beautiful Lahontan Golf Club Lodge and benefit a local art organization.
Monday, September 10
4 - 7 PM

This is a win-win situation for the people who attend and North Tahoe Arts, which is a non profit organization supporting the arts in the North Tahoe-Truckee communities through exposure, education and participation.  NTA seeks to enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike by providing quality classes and hosting exhibits that showcase local talent.

Thirty respected local artists will have work at this event.  My painting, Big Split, valued at $3500. will be one of the available works.

Each of the thirty ticket holders, who pay $300/couple, are guaranteed to leave the event with a work of art that is valued over $400.  Thirty tickets will be sold and thirty works of art will be available; everyone 'wins'!  At the event, the ticket holder will place their name under the art piece they would like to acquire.  If more than one person requests a particular work they will have the opportunity to offer additional funds.  I would call this a bidding situation.   If there is only one name under the work of art, that person is the owner of the work.

This is a link to a few of the works of art that will be available that evening

Below is the invitation.  Please let me know if I can answer any questions or help you procure tickets. I hope you will participate as I am sure it will be a fun evening.
