Today's Drawing Is a Tool.

A tool for me.  This drawing came about because I am working on a painting that was started as a result of my Day One Drawing.

The intent was to have fall color, the feeling of changing leaves, in this painting.

However as the work on the painting moves forward I am not so sure I want to add those leaves. I rather like the stark look of the trunks and branches with out additional color.

I created today's drawing to get a feel for what it might look like if I added color.  Think I will leave this painting alone and start another that will have the additional color.

Where I live everything is affected by color, maybe where you live too.  This time of year, gold tones creep into everything and the trees begin to wear apricot, orange, and red along with those golds. So when I sat down to draw this morning the influence of these colors was hard to ignore.

Another Fall leaf inspired drawing but this one deals with negative spaces as well as the color.  It's not my favorite, but it was a good creative exercise.

Drawing Challenge, Day 3.

Having just spent three hours in front of my computer dealing with numbers I knew I needed to do something to get into the drawing mode, so drawing circles it was.  Making all those little lines, round and round is mindless, but before I knew it the leaves appeared on the page.  

Drawing makes you focus on what you are doing;  you become absorbed, relaxed, slow down.  I'll bet it lowers blood pressure and does all sorts of healthy things for you. It puts a smile on my face!

Drawing Challenge 2.

Day Two of the Challenge.

October 2 and already I am feeling challenged.  I guess I haven't spent much time drawing lately and no wonder.  Just take a look at my work table mess.

Not many would be inspired to sit down to draw when the table is covered with all kinds of miscellaneous stuff.  First action of the day, clean off the table.

Ok.  That's done and now the table and sketch book call. The pens and pencils come out and I play around, pushing the pencil over the paper without too much thinking.  The results?  Kind of ick.  So more pushing.....

I move away from one page of the sketch book to another, and this is the drawing, below, that comes out.

And just in case you are wondering, I did start the painting that is a result of yesterday's drawing.

Drawing Challenge 1.

Day One

Pencil sketch.  

This is it.  The first drawing of the challenge to create a drawing every day in October.  Inspired by the cooler temperatures, the beginning of Fall Colors. The fact that the local aspen trees have grabbed my attention has transferred into my sketch book.  But it didn't stop there.  

This must become a painting, so I appropriated a 48" x 30" blank canvas from my inventory and started with the under painting. I just knew this challenge would be interesting and move in other directions.

What is Drawing?

The other day an artist friend of mine challenged me to create a drawing every day in October.  Challenge accepted.  And based on the definition above, the paints and brushes should be put away, however rules are made so they can be broken.  Just guessing, but most likely my drawings will consist of a variety of materials.  I will post them on my blog as well as my Artist's Facebook page so you can follow along.  So here we go....let's explore drawing, and see if we can make up our own definition as we go along.

Tapping Into Your Creativity.

Whether or not this is true, I read several years ago that looking at or drawing circles will help you tap into your imagination and creativity.

So when I am faced with a blank canvas I take out my sketch book and begin to draw circles.  Those circles become sketches.  A painting is born.
