Working on a Painting for The New Tahoe Forest Cancer Center

The Art Selection Committee contacted me and commissioned a painting that will be influenced and guided by my Sticks and Stones series of works, an example is shown above. The completed work will represent balance, clarity, permanence, light, and positivity.

I began with black under painting on the canvas. Then I lay on explosive color.

After those dry, I over paint with a combination of two pigments and then score through the paint to allow some of the under paint to show through. This gives the work a more interesting and textural visual, and it creates the background for the rock cairn.

It's Ready for Delivery & Installation!

Though I have been posting photos of this painting for about a week, it has actually been on the easel for a few months. Before that I was sketching and out in the field observing. I am still staring at every palm I see, doing a visual dissection.

When I am preparing to work on a particular subject, I conduct research, find the subject to sketch, immerse myself in that subject. It's interesting to see how the research can influence the way I paint.

I do want to tell you a bit about palms. Do you know that they inhabit almost every type of habitat, from rain forests to deserts? They appear in fossil records from 80 million years ago.

And do you know that in many historical cultures palms have been symbols for victory, peace and fertility?

Take a closer look at the next palm tree you pass. It may surprise you to see the textural detail, how the tree grows, how it is maintained.

This painting is scheduled for installation on March 12. It is going into a graceful, Pan Pacific influenced, ocean front home in Southern California. For now, I get to live with it...just a while longer.

The First Thing That I'd Like To Do

Is To Save Every Day.

If I could make days last forever.

I'd save every day like a treasure.

You may have already recognized these words as some of the lyrics from Jim Croce's 'Time In A Bottle'. How many of us wish we could save, lengthen, extend time? How many of us think time passes more quickly each year? Frequently I say, 'time has large wings that grow larger and flap faster every year'. Art captures a moment in time, preserves a moment in time. For the artist, the work created saves the time spent during the process. It's a bit like saving time in a bottle.

Laying in the fronds was time consuming but I am pleased with the depth and shadow effects.

I am using a very limited palette, which is usually the case, so there is a great deal of mixing going on to accomplish my vision.

Back into the studio....brush in hand....a fabulous painterly day ahead.

The Gallery Wall

While this is not the best photo of the installed gallery wall, it will give you an idea of how it came together. The customer wanted to use the lemon painting I created for them a few years ago and this massive clock. They left the rest up to me. After a few discussions about subject matter I came up with pomegranates, green apples and the pineapple painting. You can read more about those works in previous blog posts.

Now I am off to the studio to continue working on a commissioned palm inspired painting. I have been blogging about working simultaneously on three different commissions, and this is the second, which will receive most of my attention now. The canvas, 60" x 48", was under painted with black gesso, and the composition sketched on in pencil.

Here is the palette of pigments for this work.

Layers of pigment were applied to the negative space areas.

Some of the stylized palms, that will become background area are laid onto the canvas, and fronds begin to appear on the left side.

The completed painting will hang in an ocean front home in Southern California.

Tomorrow Is The Day!

The commissioned gallery wall goes up tomorrow. All of the work is complete, finished this afternoon with the Pineapple painting, the last work.

The new owners play games and have a special talent at Scrabble. With the request that a pineapple painting be included on the wall and my knowledge of their love of games, this is what and how it came together:

The pineapple is a symbol of welcome and hospitality, so I chose letters from: Pineapple, Welcome, To, Home, and the owner's name to place on the canvas in a scrabble game appearance.

I layered on pigment and carved through it to give additional dimension to the painting.

And the pineapple? Well, it's just a pineapple.

When It Rains, It Pours!

A Descriptive Adage

Here I am in the middle of three commissions, working on them simultaneously, getting a bit scattered, finding my center, and then it starts to pour.

It's a good pour, but it is a bit drenching. I am not complaining; it's all good.

Before I left for Mexico I was deep into these three commissions, and just before leaving I picked up three small canvases to paint for the Artists' Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum for their fund raising event, 99 Bucks. More about that event in a later post. This adds three small paintings to be created.

Then two days ago I receive another commission. Great! It fits into my schedule. It's for the new, under construction, state-of-the-art, rural cancer center in Truckee, CA. Click HERE to be redirected to that series pictured on my web site. The painting will be a rock cairn; the palette will be jewel tones; the meaning will focus on balance, clarity and power. You will see it on this blog. This adds one more to the queue of canvases to be painted. Up to six now.

And then, just today, I receive a package in the mail from Placer Arts. I had received an invitation from them to create a work of art, with a box they provide. Title of the exhibition: Outside The Box. I thought I would receive a small, already constructed box with which to work. What a surprise to get a mid sized, flat package! Curious. Another surprise to open the package and find the tidy bundle of wood slats! Love the way they were tied together with simple twine. This is going to be an interesting challenge.

Do you get the deluge that's going on here? As I said, it's all good!

The Gallery Wall commission is nearing completion. My goal is to have it installed by the end of this week, and I will post photos once it is done.

Serendipity

It's a Great Word

Serendipity

Saying the word makes me feel like jumping up and down, or skipping around the room or across the lawn. Yes, yes, I do have lawn outside this time of year.

Serendipity is good fortune. So when I was invited to head south into Mexico to paint for a week I thought the invitation serendipitous. As you know, if you read this blog, I have been working on three commissions simultaneously. That can get a bit hectic and I can get a bit scattered. With sketchbook, watercolor paints and brushes I headed south thinking I would draw and paint palms because that is one of the commissions, palms. I would have a chance to step away from the studio, relax and center myself. I would focus on palms.

Serendipity is an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident. So even though I declared I would be painting palms, in Palmilla, I discovered, quite by accident, I wanted to paint pineapples while there. A beautiful pineapple sat in the kitchen upon our arrival. One of these commissions involves a pineapple painting, so what a great way to get to know this fruit, one I have not painted previously, one that had been in my scattered thoughts, one that needed some attention. I would draw and paint this fruit.

As is typical of the way I work, I sketched the fruit in detail and then painted these quick watercolors to give me working knowledge of the pineapple and how I might like to present it in the final painting.

Another Apple Painting

This one is titled, A.

All these green apples. There is a bit of a double meaning here, is there not? Green Apples? The color green, and/or the reference to organic?

While I do see loads of green colored apples in the markets, I don't see many organically grown apples in the markets. Why is that?

Apples....all started with Eve, the Greek gods quibbled over the apple, it helped Newton discover gravity and it made Steve Jobs loads of money. How much do you know about apples?

Apples, known as a cleansing food, contain fibre, antioxidants and fruit flavonoids. The most important of the flavonoids contained in apples is quercetin, which has anti-inflammatory as well as anti-cancer actions. Apples contain vitamin C as well – more so in green apples than in red ones. Apples can reduce blood cholesterol levels, counter constipation and diarrhoea, help joint problems and help prevent diseases in general. Apples are best eaten raw, as cooking them can reduce the flavonoids by as much as 70 percent into the cooking water. It is also a good idea to eat the apple unpeeled as flavonoids are contained in or near the skin. It's better to eat them if they are naturally or organically grown, but you will have to look for them.

No more speaking about apples.

It's back to the easel and apple painting for me.

Letters and Apples....

The Alphabet and Apples

Of course the letter A is for Apples. Haven't we heard this since we were children?

Since one of my current commissions is a gallery wall with groups of paintings, several are apples, and since I have this fascination with words and letters, words keep showing up on the canvas.

The word 'alphabet came into Middle English from the Late Latin word alphabetum, which in turn originated in the Ancient Greek alphabet, from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet. Alpha and beta in turn came from the first two letters of the Phoenician alphabet, and meant ox and house respectively.

Ok, I get the using the first two letters of the Greek alphabet to form a word to represent the group of letters, but the whole ox and house meaning is a bit random...

My studio is filled with apples. Apples sitting on the table, apples in bowls, apples perched on the easel. Next to the apples there are bowls of letters. Letters are on the floor. Letters are strewn about. For now I am using the letter A.

Absolutely, A is for Apple.

The last of the Pomegranates...

It's The Same Composition

But It's a Different Palette.

I painted four of these pomegranate compositions, each a little different from the last. One is a collage...the one shown above.

There have been other pom paintings and some of them will now be framed and hung on a gallery wall which was commissioned for a new home in the Southern California dessert.

I am moving on to green apples which will be another part of the gallery wall. Check back to see how this all comes together.

A Visual Artist I AM...

Not A Verbal Artist

I have a fascination with words, probably because I don't use them very well.

Sometimes my speech is a bit halting as my brain searches for the words I want to utter (it's kind of a clutter in there). But give me some brushes, a canvas or paper and I can pour forth the creativity without thinking (I guess the clutter moves aside). Words are wonderful things, primary communication, but art is the same. I frequently tell people, 'I am a visual artist, not a verbal artist'. I communicate through my work.

When a recent commission became a painting that required words on the canvas I began to think about other works I have created which incorporate words.

There have been collages which included newspaper and magazine clippings

and hand painted words on canvas, but now I am intrigued with applied letters, like in this small pomegranate painting:

So a twist develops in my work. Words and more words. Not all my work will incorporate words, or will it? Does this make me a verbal artist too?

A pomegranate is actually a berry.

The syrup made from pomegranates is called grenadine.

It seems fitting to be sketching a painting pomegranates as we enter a new year.

The busy season. No time to get everything done. Frantic behavior seems to surround us.

So stop, take a deep breath, look out the window, smile, stretch, turn off your computer. And don’t clean the house. Get back to creating or what ever else it is that you love to do. That’s what it takes to create the rich life you deserve.

Sketching for A Commission

And Getting the General Idea on Paper First

I took some time to get a bit of exercise on a rainy day in the desert, so it was into the gym and onto the exercise bike. Not my favorite way to exercise. I'd rather be outside where I can look around and see everything there is to see, but it was raining, and while I know I won't melt in the rain, it just seemed more expedient to go inside today.

Sitting next to me was a friend who asked about my palm painting and my preparation for a commission. " Do you make notes as well as drawings?" was her question.

Yes Yes Yes....I do. Not always detailed notes because so much of what an artist does to create is carried around in the head. And sometimes those notes become obsolete during the process as changes are made, so mine are fairly brief.

This discussion with my cycling buddy made me think you might like to see a few pages from my sketch book, with the notes. I get the general composition with positive and negative space delineated in the sketches, the palette recorded in the notes, always the date, and any other thoughts I think are pertinent to the process. It is all very general in the sketch book.

It's Still Cold In The Desert

And I am still painting palms, looking at palms, sketching palms. It's not only palm-mania in my studio but that is all I see right now....everywhere I look.

They are statuesque trees.

I even went to see a film called 'The Sex Life of the Date Palm'.

It's about time to complete this palm study and start sketching for the commissioned work.

Lucky I am. I have a list of commissions. One of these is for a large acrylic on canvas palm tree painting and since I have always painted my palms in watercolor, I am working on a 'sample' canvas, pictured above.

I want to make sure the customer and I are on the same page, so to speak. They have seen my watercolors of palms and the giclee prints of these watercolors blown up to huge scale, but they wanted an original. I suggested an acrylic on gallery wrap canvas and it was agreed. So even though it is December and everywhere you look you see evergreens, in my studio it's all about palms.

Beyond The Fence

A couple other ranches are just north, so when looking that direction you see cattle grazing and it is those creatures and pasture land that inspired 'Beyond The Fence'. Carved circles in the paintings above and below are representative of the huge watering pivots on the land.

View To The Smith

A colorful, old red barn sits on one of those other ranches. The property was always referred to as 'The Smith'. Looking that direction you see a blue blue sky over the open land and it is this view that dictated the palette used in 'A View From The Farm' series of paintings.

Duncan Idaho

If you read the Dune trilogy you are familiar with the character Duncan Idaho who was inspirational in the naming of this particular horse, and it is said that the young boy, named Duncan, who lived on the farm at the time the horse was named was an influence as well.

Almond Blossoms

About 200 acres of the farm were planted in almonds, an orchard crop. The trees are expressive and interesting all times of the year, but late spring after pollination and the nut set the blossom petals create a delicate floral snowfall. How could this vision not be included?

Peach Blossoms

One row of Saturn peach trees grow in the middle of the almond orchard. It is difficult to see a difference between the trees however the color of the blossoms is an indicator. Almond blossoms are creamy white while the peach blossoms are a vibrant pink.

Oats

The year these works were painted, the farm was growing oats. As harvest time nears, the oats turn golden and wave gracefully in the breeze, far too picturesque and a must for inclusion in the series. 'Oats' became one of my favorite paintings.

Harvest

Some crops are cut and baled, and such is the case with oats. The bales are stacked close to the host field until sold and moved. The rows in the field and the stacked bales became a visual that just had to be portrayed in paint.

As the month of November comes to an end I have shared with you most of the paintings in 'A View From The Farm'. It was a challenging and rewarding project, one that ended up having a great deal of meaning for me. Hope you enjoyed seeing these paintings and learning a bit about this farm. Gates And More...

A View From The Farm series has two paintings with entry gates as the subject. One of these was inspired by The Flying M which is an adjacent ranch.

The Flying M

All of the paintings are made up of layer upon layer of pigment which has been blended, carved through, textured. Each canvas incorporates a photograph or photographs of what ever it was that inspired that particular painting. Elements from the photo are repeated in the painted part of the work. In The Flying M, there are carved M's flying through the sky and the name of the ranch is carved through the paint.

Hunt Farms Gate

In this painting, Hunt Farms Gate, not only is the ranch brand carved through the paint several times, but carved circular and straight lines are featured as a design element to represent the row crops on the farm.

Mamo's View

Over the years, the matriarch of the family came to be known as Mamo. Visitors often found her sitting outside in front of her farm house where she had views across a catalpa tree lined drive, a corral and numerous fields.

This project became a scrapbook of sorts, a preservation of a place in paintings, which was emphasized with the use of photographs embedded in the paint. Because of this there are areas on each of the canvases that give a sense of borders used in scrapbooks. An example of this can be seen in Mamo's View around the photo and more prominently in the two paintings shown below.

The Courtyard

As you drive further into the farm you enter a courtyard surrounded by stables and corrals, a remnant of the cattle ranch days, and the inspiration for this painting.

Betty Lane

Beyond the courtyard, behind the stables there is a short dirt road named Betty Lane. Betty became Mamo but the name for the road stuck. There is an area of agave's planted here which became a significant part of the composition in this painting.

Crossing The Fairfield

A canal runs through the farm carrying water used in the farming process. A rickety old wooden bridge crosses that canal and that bridge looks like it could collapse at any minute, however it seems to endure the traffic and continues to survive.

The Far Away Barn

After crossing the canal a dirt road leads up to The Far Away Barn, which is a magnificent old wooden structure with tall doors and open sides. It is a graceful yet imposing building that can be seen from miles away.

I am enjoying a visit to this collection of paintings, thinking of harvest, being aware of the farm and farming. It seems like an appropriate time of year to be doing this.

A View From The Farm

Several years ago I painted seventeen canvases to represent farm land my family purchased in the '70's. At that time it was a working cattle ranch. My husband and I moved there in 1978 with our two young children and a dog. It didn't take us long to acquire a Shetland pony named Bucky, a cat or two, a Muskovy Duck we called Quacky Doodle, Canadian Geese named Silly and Candy, now and then responsibility for a calf whose mother had died. Eventually the cattle ranch became a farm with crops, rows and rows of crops. It is to be expected that the farm became an inspiration and that some of it ended up influencing my work.

During the cattle days, looking north from our home across the adjacent ranches and Lake Yosemite, we had unobstructed views of grazing and orchard land all the way to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. In the spring, depressions were filled with Butter and Eggs, a local low growing wildflower. Towering eucalyptus trees grew along Lake Road. To begin with I created this painting, A View From The Farm, that gave rise to the idea of creating a body of work which would commemorate and celebrate the farm. Of the seventeen paintings in this collection, eight are 48" square, eight are 48" x 30". Only this one is 48" x 60".

Have you ever driven through or spent time in an area where crops are grown? The Central Valley of California is just such a place.

Driving through land covered with cotton, wheat, oats, barley, nut trees, corn, and tomatoes can be a visual treat. These are wide open spaces bustling with activity which changes with the seasons. Spring time is beautiful with new growth, Summer is hot with crop maturity taking place, and Fall is abundant with harvest. The tail end of harvest time is especially interesting to me. It's the end and it's the beginning.

Hay Stack

Stacks of hay, cotton and nuts which have already been cut or picked, sit along the sides of the fields and roads waiting to be moved and used.

While the sky is not so blue it is understandable with all the tractors working the fields stirring up dust. Cutting, gathering, ripping, listing...it's all taking place.

Loaded trucks are cruising the roads taking their haul to packing houses and processors. Tractors, monotonously moving back and forth, are reworking the ground to prepare for the next season.

There's a rhythm to all of it, and there is a color to it as well, many colors. The colors we associate with Fall surround farming this time of year.

Corn Stubble

Have you seen where the food you eat and crops you use are planted, grown and then harvested? If not, I suggest you take a trip to a farm area just to see what is going on, and find a farm that will give you a tour. Not only will you experience a visual treat but you will have an educational experience.

I have a friend who farms in Colorado. Take a look at her blog and you will get a peek into the life of a farming family. Boyles Family Farms

A couple weeks ago I visited an organic farm and restaurant in Baja California where they grow what they serve. The menu was interesting, the presentation was beautiful and the food tasty. They are sustainable farmers who believe what they do should benefit the land and the people around them. Here's a link to their web site: http://www.flora-farms.com/site/default.aspx They are located in a lush, palm filled valley and the restaurant sits in the middle of their fields, so you are surrounded by rows of growing edibles. It's colorful and unique.

Some of the farmers I know in the Central Valley are working large tracts of land, hundreds of acres, sending their production far and wide. They too believe what they do should benefit the land and the people around them. It's just on a different scale.

Whether you visit a small farm or a large farm, whether you visit in Fall or another time of year, you are in for a visual treat, an educational experience that is heightened by the visual.

It looks Wintry, but it is Fall.

It Truly is Still Fall Time

Ignore the evergreen trees with lights that have begun to appear as decorations in parking lots. It's Fall for goodness sake.

Most retailers are still showing Fall fruit, pumpkins, colored leaves, everything in orange, golden tones, brown...Fall colors.

A few apricot and golden leaves are clinging like crazy to the aspen trees in the yard. They don't want to give up. You don't need to either. When passing by those decorated evergreens put yourself into a zen state of Fall.

The word zen, by the way, is from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word Chan, which in turn is derived from the Sanskrit word dhyana, which can be approximately translated as meditation or meditative state.

Focus on the colors, the feel, the sights of Fall.

It truly is Fall.

I Paint Rocks

Most of you already know that.

Those rocks I paint come in many different sizes, some considered pebbles and some boulders. Because I am enamoured with rocks of various sizes, I tend to pick them up and carry them home now and then, the ones I can. I have even had a couple tables made out of rocks, one weighed in at two tons, but that is another story.

Last week I was given a petite book titled, Heart Stones, by Josie Iselin. Yes, I have a small collection of stones shaped like hearts, but receiving the book prompted me to wade around in the lake for a chunk of time looking for more.

Look at the little tiny one sitting on the bigger rock. It's a perfect heart shape!

I found four new ones in about a half hour. This is just another reminder to See Where You Are (yes, that's the title of my book), and most of you know I believe you should look closely at everything around you and you may be surprised at what you see.

Reading about and collecting heart shaped rocks jogged my craggy memory about painting shapes, like hearts, to look like rocks. 'Hearts Made of Stone' are four small canvases that are exactly that, heart shapes looking like stone.

There is a fraternity of stone lovers out there. According to Iselin we 'share an abiding respect for the Earth and her wonders'. It's true. That is exactly why I paint rocks and tell people that Nature is my muse.

It's The Light

Or maybe it's the clarity of the water. Or maybe it's both. Whatever it is, this time of year inspires.

The leaves on the trees begin to change color.

The light that is cast is golden.

The water in Tahoe is at it's most transparent, and by the way the color is almost unreal....shades of transparent turquoise. When it's calm the surface almost looks like jello, clear, clean jello.

Where I live human movement is almost non existent. It's peaceful, it's quiet. Nature is the emphasis.

All of this permeates life and self. It's an infusion of inspiration.

Pears and Apples

Palette Knife Painting

Sometimes it is so very easy to express yourself...with words, with deeds, with paint, paper, sticks, stones...whatever. Other times it seems so difficult. The other day was one of those difficult days, so I decided to experiment, do something different. Take an old painting that was a failure, gesso over, and pick up a palette knife! Something I have not done for many years. I like my brushes.

The pears and apples were still in the studio, so I started slathering on the pigment while observing the fruit.

The palette knife dictates application of solid color, simplified shapes, heavy application of the paint.

When all was done I realized I had enjoyed the process of expressing myself, but I do still love the brushes.

It Really is Fall

Like A Light Switch

Mother Nature threw the switch. Last week I was kayaking and swimming in the lake. Today snow is flying through the air, and I refuse to believe it is winter.
It's Fall.

Sketching in the Garden

Seeing Where You Are

If you are in the garden you not only have things to see, but things to hear.

Mr. Jackson Pollock, my amazing Ocicat, and I were outside.

This was his time to wander and mine to sketch. I kept hearing small popping noises, like a twig breaking. Each time my attention would turn to the area where the noise was generated, but nothing was there. If you follow my Facebook page you know we have had bears here this summer, so I kept expecting to see some wild creature stepping carefully through the plants.

Eventually I realized the noise was coming from the wild peas rather than a wild animal. The peas have not only gone to seed but have dried and are beginning to drop their seeds. Ah....it is fall time, isn't it.

The plant grows wild in my yard, almost taking over some areas of the garden. Bright pink blossoms bloom on slender stalks.

The flower withers, drops and a long green pod grows in it's place.

As the summer progresses the seeds develop inside the pod and the pod begins to dry.

In the fall the pod twists open in a violent jerk, releasing the seeds. The sound this makes is similar to a twig breaking. So ok, I have a great imagination to think it might have been a bear, but they have been here several times. It made for interrupted sketching until I realized the cause, and it also made me realize we are definitely into Fall.

It Really Was A Scam!

I guess this isn't so odd, but truly, I was contacted by scammers. A few weeks ago I received an e-mail query about prices on two paintings that could be seen on my web site. Though the grammar was a bit odd, I answered politely. After several e-mails between us, with far too much personal information provided by the other side, I received a cashiers check for twice the amount on the invoice, and absolutely no return address on the envelop in which it arrived.

I had thought the entire episode strange and was wary, so up front I stated my policy was receipt of funds, certified, deposited by my bank prior to crating and shipping the work of art. I took the check to my bank who checked it for the invisible stamp that can only be seen by their special secret machine in the back room, and amazingly it was there. However the banker also called the issuing bank who confirmed the check was a fraud. Apparently several of these checks had been sent out and the issuing bank had received numerous calls.

Could it be that what is found in life and nature is not what is really there, but that which artists have taught people to find and see there through art?

Or are artists moved to create what they experience whether they do so consciously or unconsciously?

For many years I have painted Lake Tahoe Boulders and while doing so have purposely stayed away from compositions that included split and cracked rocks. Recently during a critique of the past year of paintings I realized my work is now focused on these splits and cracks and further realized my life has been filled with splits and cracks and that this year of paintings is an unconscious representation of life. Art Imitates Life.

However, as an artist, it is my intent to encourage the viewer to see what they have not seen previously, thus encouraging Life to Imitate Art.

Many years ago I received a gift of child’s crayon drawing with the words, “Be Where You Are” written in primitive, child-like block letters, across the bottom. I was captivated by the sentiment, so this framed drawing hung in my home for many years. I attempted to live the sentiment and found it inched its way into my art theory and practice, with a small twist. Not only, Be Where You Are, but See Where You Are.

We look at things every day, from the moment we get up in the morning until we go to sleep at night. We look at everything around us, but do we actually see these things? Our surroundings are filled with dramatic landscapes, lakescapes, seascapes, clear blue or cloudy skies, colorful sunsets, boulders, pebbles, trees, sticks, leaves, dainty small to spectacularly large flowers, and other unusual and amazing things we should all appreciate. So many of us look, without seeing, and many never even look.

Over the years, my work has become all about looking, seeing, observing and noticing our surroundings. Be aware, pay attention to the ‘big picture’ in front of you but also pay attention to the minutia, the detail: light, color, line, shape, texture. By creating paintings that are a close perspective of the subject, I encourage the viewer to take the time to pay attention to the detail of that subject whether it happens to be light patterns on rocks under the water’s surface, huge granite boulders balanced on one another, the prickly spines on a sculptural cactus, or the luscious produce found in farmers’ markets.

Scheduling, Golf and Art

Over Scheduled

Does this happen to you? Studio time, shows, more studio time, more shows, desk work as a result of the shows and sales, house guests, oh, and then there is golf. Golf? How did golf ever enter life? It is time consuming, frustrating, evil, a personal challenge and a great deal of fun.

So for the last two weeks I have had two trunk shows of jewelry and paintings and two golf tournaments. Over scheduled?

The trunk show was a wonderful success with sales of one of a kind, outrageous jewelry and paintings (thank you ladies). And as a result of the show I installed Shallow Waters VI in a beautiful mountain home high on the hill, overlooking Lake Tahoe. Click here to see the painting. Also hosted a private trunk show yesterday after another round of golf.

The level of golf played was not great but the partners were delightful and it was fun.

Time for a Break. From Golf.

So today I am taking my house guest out on the lake in a kayak to see the inspirational boulders and rocks that surround and pepper the bottom of our crystal clear lake. It will be relaxing and encourage me to get back to the easel.

Domino Rocks III

Though I am now working on and with rocks of a different sort, I have been able to complete this small painting. It's an 18" x 30" canvas of a rock grouping off the Crystal Bay Point at Lake Tahoe. This is the third, and smallest, painting of this particular site where I spend time floating in my kayak or rowing by in my shell.

And the rocks of a different sort? Currently I am at the jewelry design table preparing for summer trunk shows, working with turquoise, citrine, jade, and sparkly druzy quartz in a wide range of luscious colors. Love these rocks!

I approach the design of jewelry the same way I approach the creation of a painting. A woman's neck is the canvas, the stones are the creative materials used to enhance the canvas. Composition of the total piece is a critical part of the design, taking into consideration color, line, shape, and texture as I would in a painting. Shine, matt finish and luminosity of the stones influence the final design. All of these elements must work and flow together to present a visual that is unique and pleasing as well as comfortable and easy to wear.

Nature is my muse. Because I prefer natural materials, the stones I use are formed by the earth, water, and creatures that inhabit our planet. The shapes and colors are irresistible. From around the world, I collect unique and unusual stones and beads which may be carved, faceted, polished smooth, or left in the original state. Occasionally I include a found object or beautifully crafted item to punctuate the design.

Options are important to me, so I create necklaces that can be worn long, doubled or tripled into a shorter version. Layering is also a feature of my designs. I advocate wearing multiple necklaces and bracelets that harmonize and play with and against each other.

Painted Plates

A Commission That is Slightly Different

I received a commission to paint dinner plates. This is something I have not done before, so I made some calls, did some investigating, and gave it a whirl.

Here is the first experimental plate.

Experimental because I see a few ways to handle the materials a bit differently to obtain some slightly different results that would be more pleasing to me. And I realize, as a cook and foodie who is always concerned about the aesthetics of the food placement on the plate as well as the overall look of the food and plate together, that my style of design and painting would better suit a charger than the actual dinner plate.

I can visualize a table of these plates (all a bit different but painted in the same palette) used as chargers. Now to convince the customer that they want chargers rather than dinner plates.

Never Trust A Painter

Really?

Work on Domino Rocks Continues with the addition of underwater color and highlights.

A painter with a brush in hand, that is.

Seems to me, a painter will paint almost anything. I think it has to do with loving the process, watching a subject grow under the brush, working with the material.

I had an old camel back sofa once that needed to be placed in the middle of a room. The back was faded. Solution: paint the back. After a coat or two of gesso, that is exactly what I did.

The Top of the Table

I needed bed side tables and couldn't find anything I liked. Solution: nude furniture and a little imagination with some paint.

That old washer and dryer set that was baby puke yellow? Solution: get out the paint and brushes. It became a work of art and fun to use.

And just the other day I received a commission to paint eight dinner plates. Now this will be something different for me and loads of fun.

We painters just love to paint.

So don't stand still for too long next to a painter with brush in hand. You just might be the next canvas.

Painting in The Studio

Domino Rocks

After spending time in and among the massive boulders on Lake Tahoe sketching and gathering inspiration,

I have focused on this particular rock group.

I call them Domino Rocks since they remind me of those little rectangle tiles also known as bones, cards, tickets, spinners and stones. Stones! These boulders are certainly not little ( I guess each one is several tons in weight), certainly not stones, but I like the idea of calling them stones.

These particular stones (actually very big rocks) also remind me of mah jongg tiles. And since I am heading out the door later to play my Tuesday game of mah jongg, what better subject to be painting than these Domino Rocks.

This is the beginning of my newest painting, Domino Rocks,

which is not finished. It is also about the third or fourth time I have painted these particular boulders.

It's That Limited Palette Again

This painting was inspired by the aspen trees next to my deck that are so very slowly getting their leaves.

It is the restricted palette I have been using, influenced by the drippy, grey, cool weather. Hence the title of this painting, though a friend did point out that spring is almost over even though the plants don't seem to know that, or didn't until yesterday. Yesterday the sky was blue and the sun did shine! Has Summer arrived?

Different Subject, Same Palette

Spring Pears

While in the market the other day I spied a juicy looking pile of pears. Not sure why I associate pears with Fall, but here they were in June. There are over 3000 different varieties of pears, and they are grown all over the world, so why wouldn't they be available now?

I have been reading a tome about Cleopatra in which the descriptions of banquets include pears, always cooked, never eaten raw, by the Romans anyway. And due to this on going reading, it seems like months of it, I find Egyptian and Roman factoids swimming in my mind, almost constantly, thus I was drawn to the pears in the market.

Since I like to paint produce with the actual fruit in front of me, these two luscious beauties ended up in my basket, in my studio and then on the canvas. Because I still have the limited palette used on the aspen trees, I dashed out this little painting using that palette.

Restricted Palette

Using a Restricted Palette

Where I live we are still dealing with cool to cold temps, sun-rain-snow. The plants are trying to send out their spring growth but it is a slow process this year. Finally little, brilliant green leaves are showing themselves. Daily I check my plants and have been inspired by this new growth.

After sketching, it was into the studio to select a palette and begin a painting. I wanted to give warmth to the composition so I selected cadmium yellow, then an opposing color garbazole violet, which is a cool color though it is a combination of red (warm) and blue (cool). For the fresh spring shade I used chromium green oxide and titanium white for light and highlights. This was my restricted palette.

I find that limiting the palette creates a visually interesting, harmonic painting. This particular work almost shimmers and gives the visual effect of the longer daylight hours or sunset in Spring.

Viewing Art is Like Being In Love

Could this be True?

Research suggests viewing works of art can stimulate much the same response as being in love. That is the conclusion of a series of brain-mapping experiments conducted by a professor of neurobiology and neuroaesthetics at the University College of London.

“Looking at art triggers a surge of feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine into the brain and results in feelings of intense pleasure,” says Professor Semir Zeki. “We have recently found that when we look at things we consider to be beautiful, there is increased activity in the pleasure reward centers of the brain. Essentially, the feel-good centers are stimulated, similar to the stages of love and desire.”

Failure Teaches Success

One of my sons, who is a painter, asked me about the quality of my work, saying something like, "Mom, how do you consistently create these paintings?"

My answer was to quote the above Japanese saying as well as telling him to allow yourself to have failures. We learn from our failures. If a painting isn't working and you consider it a failure, learn from it and move on. Each work leads to the next.

A few months ago, a friend who is also a painter came to visit bringing with her the gift of a small painting.

Being intrigued with her palette from the moment the painting entered my home, I decided to let it inspire my next produce painting, knowing full well this could be a disaster. Using my techniques and my own style I plunged in and you see my completed apple painting here.

I consider this painting a success. But if I had not allowed myself the ability to experience a failure, I would not have ended up with this painting.
