Drawing Challenge. Final Days.

It's The Last Day, To Be Exact.

Catrina
Day 31 Drawing
Pencil

The last day of the Drawing Challenge agreed to by two painters has arrived. Blaine and I made a commitment to create a drawing each day in October, which we did.  These drawings have been posted in our blogs and on our Facebook pages. Like I say in my book, See Where You Are, we looked at our surroundings and we saw what was there.  We were inspired.

Surrounded by Fall, we were inspired by foliage and fruit, then found color inching its way into our drawings.

Now here it is, last day of the month, October 31.  It's Halloween, Nevada Day, All Saints Day.  Tomorrow is Dia de los Muertos .  To celebrate the end of the month, the end of the challenge and the beginning of November, my final drawing is Catrina, one of the most popular figures of Dia de los Muertos.

It's been fun to have this challenge.  It's led to new paintings and a great dialogue between artists.  I hope you have enjoyed, but now as with every great situation, it comes to an end.

Drawing Challenge. Day 23.

Rocks and More Rocks.

Rocks, Stones, Boulders, Pebbles....all are fascinating to me.  They represent power and permanence.  The geology of rocks varies depending on whether they are igneous, metamorphic or sedementary.  We are surrounded by rocks.

I wear rocks.

I collect rocks.

I paint rocks.

Therefore it is no surprise that today's drawing is a rock cairn.  Those colorful leaves picked up off the ground yesterday are still on my work table so they worked their way into the drawing.  Still cannot get away from Fall color.

Drawing Challenge. Day 22.

Cannot Get Away From Fall Color

Drawing 22
Wax Crayon

Try as I might, I just cannot get away from the Fall Color.  It surrounds.  So even though I was out on the lake in my rowing shell today, with various blues above and below, the color on shore was dramatically apparent.  The leaves are falling in crazy abundance, scattering themselves across the ground to become what I call, Nature's Confetti.

Day 22 Drawing with Aspen Leaves

These aspen leaves, next to the drawing, were plucked up off the ground and brought into the studio.  Can you see why it is difficult to ignore the color?

Drawing Challenge

DAY 21

One of the most wonderful outcomes of this challenge has been a growing collection of small drawings in one sketch book, and all are different.

Drawing 21
Watercolor Pencil

It has been an interesting situation to create a small drawing every day that has no function, no other reason to be created than answering the challenge.  It's not a sketch for a painting or a sketch to present for a commission. That means each drawing is a stand alone little work of art, though some of them have been inspired by the same subject or created in the same palette.

This means I can draw ANYTHING!!!  It doesn't matter what I draw.  You have seen Fall, Lake, Boulders, Gears, Palms, Cactus, Clouds.  When I sit down in front of the sketch book I haven't known what I was going to draw, until today.

I am so curious to know what you think of this little drawing, which was posted on my Artist's Facebook page yesterday without telling the thought behind it, because sometimes knowing can lead your mind.  And once you know what inspired this drawing you may see something you would not have seen without that knowledge.

But here it is:  Today when I was meeting with my eye doc for an annual exam and he showed me the photograph of the inside of my eye I decided to create a little drawing inspired by that photo.  Just curious, what did you think of the drawing before you knew the idea behind it?  Do you like it more or less now that you know?

By the way, my eyes are healthy healthy healthy.  I am increasing my magnifiers, but that just means I get to add to my EYEBOB collection!  A new and different pair or two which I will use to peruse my growing collection of different little drawings.

Drawing Challenge.

Several Day's Drawings.

You haven't seen a blog post from me for almost a week.  A little traveling interrupted the blogging but not the drawing. I packed up sketchbook and pen and diligently created a drawing each day.

Day 15 Drawing
Ink

This was sketched into my book while flying along at about 30,000 feet.  It was a cloudy day so I drew what I saw.

Drawing Day 16
Ink

I was in the Southern California desert where cacti and palms grow side by side.  How could I not be influenced? These are nature's sculptures.

Day 17 Drawing
Ink

For two days inspiration came from knowing, that in January, I must create a work of art that will have a visible mechanical apparatus from which it will hang.  Thinking this work may contain actual wire and gears I started drawing mechanical looking shapes.

Day 18 Drawing
Ink and Colored Pencil
____________

Day 19 Drawing
Watercolor Pencil and Ink

It was a short trip.  Returned home to calm, clear, warm weather so it was out in the kayak on the lake for recreation and inspiration.  Day 19 Drawing was created after being surrounded by lake beauty.

And that drawing led to four small watercolor paintings.
___________

As I opened my sketch book today my thoughts were still filled with rocks and water.  I took the time to go through the pages to look at each of the daily drawings before sitting down to create today's.  I have used both sides of each page which has led to some bleed through and crinkling of the paper.

The pages in my sketch book showing daily drawings.

The next open page in my sketchbook, actually the back side of Day 19 Drawing, had interesting eye catching shapes making convex contours on the page. I started to draw around those shapes and 'Day 20 Drawing' developed. After working on the four little watercolor paintings, it is apparent I had rocks on the brain.

Day 20 Drawing
Pencil

There you have it.  Several days of drawing, six to be exact, without blogging, but I think I made up for that today!

Drawing Challenge. Days 12&13&14.

TWO AT A TIME or more.

Busy busy busy, so the drawings this week will be lumped together in a couple different posts.  These three are distillations of last weekend's pumpkin.  Simplifying the same palette and design elements....

Drawing Challenge. Day 12

Spinning Off Yesterday

Today's drawing, this 12th day of October, is influenced by the whimsical pumpkin created yesterday.  The idea was to simplify the lines and shapes while retaining the color and design elements.

Drawing Challenge. Day 11

A DAY ALL ABOUT FOOD

It took me all day to get into my studio. I was in the kitchen most of the day preparing a Fall dinner. Hence this little, whimsical drawing.  It was all about cooking today, well, almost.

Drawing Challenge. Day 10

FALL IS IN THE AIR.

Day 10 Drawing
Watercolor Pencil

In the air, in the light, on the water, in the trees.  Everything seems to have a golden cast.  You cannot escape the season.   So it was back to drawing leaves today.

Drawing Challenge. Day 9.

Motivation

Drawing, Day 9
Watercolor Pencil and Ink

Ah, Motivation.  Either you have it or you don't.  This drawing challenge has triggered many situations and thoughts.  One of those is motivation.  Just sitting down to draw and spending the time it takes to make a drawing and then getting lost in the process of creating the drawing brings motivation to spend more time in the studio.

Drawing, Day 9, Pamela Hunt Lee

Last night Blaine and I spent some time together discussing our challenge and the book The Artist's Way worked into our conversation.  The author, Julia Cameron, talks about jump starting creativity and motivation by writing in a journal 20 minutes every day.

Drawing, Day 9

The challenge to create a drawing every day is much the same as the writing exercise.  Both Blaine and I find ourselves making the drawing and then moving on with other projects in the studio.  We have found motivation.

Drawing Challenge. Day 8.

I Succumbed.

Drawing Challenge Day 8
Watercolor Pencil

Yes, indeed, I did.  As if my rowing shell and kayak weren't enough.  Not sure exactly why I succumbed, but I am the owner of two lovely Lakeshore Paddle Boards.  I chose Blue Betty's because they are stable and I love the blue. One other reason, my mother's name was Betty. Now every time I take out my SUP I think about my mother.  Pretty cool.

The other thing about the SUP is that it gives a different perspective of the lake.  Because you are standing up, not seated, you are looking down into the lake instead of across it.

We have had a string of magnificent lake days so I have been out on the SUP which has influenced my drawings the last couple days.  Hope you like them.  And if this weather stays the same, let me know if you would like to join me on an SUP outing.

Drawing Challenge. Day 7.

Another Spectacular Fall Day.

Aspen Tree Painting, Pamela Hunt Lee
Looking Up
Acrylic on Canvas
48" x 30"

One after another, calm, clear days, and the lake beckons. So do all the little chores and tasks outside my studio. Today's goals: finishing the cleaning of my French Ivory mah jongg set, getting the carpets cleaned, making a few phone calls and texts, and darn computer work.  Last, but not least, completing the aspen tree painting.  Check, check, check, check, check.  All accomplished!  Off to the drawing table.....and then to the lake.

Drawing Day 7
Watercolor Pencil without the water added.

Just thinking about getting out on the lake had me picking up the watercolor pencils and working on the idea of underwater seen from the SUP

Finished Drawing Day 7.

Though the drawing got a little muddied, I see a possible painting as a result of this little drawing.   However I am putting another blank canvas on the easel for an aspen tree painting, looking up again, with the addition of the feeling of Fall leaves.  Somewhat like this one I just completed.....

Drawing Challenge. Day 6.

Mixing It Up Today.

Drawing Challenge Day 6
Watercolor Pencil and Watercolor
(It started as a watercolor pencil drawing)

It's true that it would be so very easy to stay with the Fall colors, leaves, trees throughout this entire month of the Drawing Challenge. But the weather here is warm, calm, sunny, and the lake beckons.  My rowing shell, kayak and SUP have been in use every day and being surrounded by all that magnificent Tahoe water has influence that cannot be escaped.

Each excursion is different.  What is noticed, the colors, the movement of the water, the sky, the boulders....it's a lot to take in and it is, oh, so magnificent.

Today's drawing was an effort to capture the surface patterns on the lake when the water is as calm as it is today.

Where ever you are, get outdoors and enjoy the day!!!
