Studio Visit

Finger Painting

Another small canvas in the beginning stages

Not too long ago, one of my sons who is also a painter, was visiting me.  I continued painting while we talked.  Suddenly he blurted something like: 'So that's how you do it.'  My response:  "What?"

He proceeded to tell me that when looking closely at my work he couldn't figure out some of the marks that remained in the pigment, like brush strokes, but clearly not.

At that moment I had flipped my brush aside to use my fingers to push around some of the paint.

I admit it.  I paint with my fingers, but just sometimes.  If you know me, you have seen blue, green, red, yellow fingers at various times; the lingering evidence of my technique.  Fingers are a great tool.  And just maybe using my fingers reminds me of being a kid.

Fantasy

Flowers on Desert Plants

Spiny Barrel
20" x 16"
$ 600

I paint huge flowers.  They keep getting larger in my paintings and I think of them as fantasy.

Big Flowered Barrel
24" x 20"
$800

However, take a look at the flower on this miniature barrel cactus.

I keep bowls of cacti in my studio for inspiration and have been watching this cactus send out a bud which has opened into a spectacular bloom.  These little plants are just
2-3 inches in diameter...

Almost unbelievable! What does that say about my fantasy flowers?

Thorny Business

Painting in the Barrel's Spines

All members of this genus, Barrel Cactus,  have prominent ribs and are fiercely armed with heavy thorns called spines.  I have been painting these into the composition.

This painting is still a work in progress, so check back to see the stamen and pistils go into the flower next.
